A Senior Software Engineer's Journey at SmartRecruiters

Joining SmartRecruiters in 2021, Marcin Słowiak has advanced to the role of Senior Software Engineer II. His dedication to enhancing the candidate application experience ensures a seamless process for job seekers and helps employers find ideal candidates. Here’s an insight into what makes his role both exciting and impactful.

My Role & Team

I began my journey at SmartRecruiters in 2021 and now serve as a Senior Software Engineer II and team architect. 
Alongside my colleagues, I focus on enhancing the candidate application experience, making it effortless for candidates to apply for jobs through our platform and ensuring employers can find the ideal candidates.

There are few key factors that makes my everyday job interesting and valuable:

  • Impact on product decisions
Impact on product decisions is a pivotal aspect of my role, influencing the direction and features of the tools I support. By analyzing user feedback and data trends, I can identify areas for improvement and advocate for enhancements that enhance usability and functionality. Ultimately, contributing to informed product decisions ensures that our offerings evolve in ways that meet the evolving needs and preferences of our users.

  • Engineers collaboration

I consider it significant to work within a collaborative environment, benefiting from a team of skilled engineers with diverse expertise. Access to this wealth of knowledge enables me to seek advice on ideas, gather feedback, and enhance solutions to maintain high standards.

  • Opportunities for growth and learning

Beyond the daily tasks, SmartRecruiters provides numerous opportunities for personal and professional development. From knowledge-sharing sessions to attending conferences, I've been able to continuously grow and expand my skill set. I'm also proud to lead our reading club, where we delve into industry trends and share insights.

At SmartRecruiters, we're not just developing software; we're solving a problem that deeply impacts people's lives – finding a job. Being part of a product company allows me to see the direct impact of our work on our users' experiences and outcomes.

  • Strong team dynamics

We operate as a cohesive unit within our team, where success and challenges are shared collectively. Our culture emphasises transparency, open communication, and a shared sense of responsibility. Whether brainstorming potential solutions or executing plans, we do it together, celebrating wins and learning from setbacks.

  • Flexible working policy

The pandemic changed the way of working across the world. What I value the most is that I can work remotely. For me, it is a productivity booster as it eliminates the stress and time of commuting, allowing me to focus more on my tasks and maintain a better work-life balance.


Innovation and Project Impact

During my time at SmartRecruiters, I've had the opportunity to spearhead and contribute to numerous exciting projects. Today, I'm thrilled to share with you two of the most impactful initiatives I've been involved in:

  • SmartOnboard project

One of the most rewarding projects I've been a part of at SmartRecruiters was the creation of our onboarding platform for new hires. Recognizing the importance of a seamless onboarding experience, we set out to develop a solution that would streamline the process and help new team members get up to speed faster. By collaborating with stakeholders across departments, we were able to gather insights into their needs and pain points, allowing us to design a platform that addresses these challenges effectively. It was really interesting to learn the new domain and observe the adoption of incoming features. You can learn a lot from product metrics!

  • Migration to Spring Boot Framework

Another significant project I had the privilege of being involved in was the migration of our backend services to the Spring Boot framework. This project presented both technical and non-technical challenges.

From a technical standpoint, significant effort was required to migrate existing code, which was often tightly coupled with the previous framework, and to implement necessary architectural refinements. This involved carefully disentangling legacy code and ensuring that the new architecture aligned with Spring Boot's conventions and best practices. We also had to address dependencies and compatibility issues, ensuring that all integrated systems functioned seamlessly within the new framework.

Before diving into the technical aspects, we took the time to gather requirements from critical areas such as observability, reliability, and many more. We documented these requirements in a comprehensive guide called the Platform Interoperability Layer (PIL). This document not only streamlined the migration process but also set a clear path for integrating new frameworks and technologies into our company in the future.

This journey was not easy, but it demonstrated exceptional collaboration skills across engineering teams and individuals. It's worth noting that the migration to Spring Boot not only modernized our technology stack but also established a robust foundation for future innovation and growth.
